The Berwick Rangers Supporters’ Club was formed on Wednesday 3rd November 1927 after a large and enthusiastic meeting of supporters took place in the Long Room of the Corn Exchange in Sandgate, Berwick-upon-Tweed.
The meeting was addressed by Mr D Kirkwood, chairman of the Edinburgh club, St Bernard’s, on the subject of supporters’ clubs, and afterwards it was unanimously decided to form one to assist the Berwick Rangers.
Mr Kirkwood said that supporters’ clubs started a number of years ago in the large provincial towns with certain definite objects of assisting the clubs. The first club of this description was formed for East Stirlingshire with the idea of assisting the team to gain a position in the second division of the Scottish Football League. Within 18 months they had succeeded.
Support for St Bernard’s had enabled them to retain their position in the second division by securing one or two good players. All supporters’ clubs had different problems to face.
The functions of a supporters’ club was to provide social intercourse amongst its members with the idea of arranging social and fund raising events that would bring them together with the profit helping the club. As a consequence of their fund raising capacity, the supporters’ club of the St Bernard’s had two representatives attending the meetings of the directors to put forward their views and concerns, but there was a clause providing that the two were not responsible for the financial transactions of the club.
After Mr Kirkwood’s presentation, Mr D Hall proposed and Mr H Egan seconded that a supporters’ club be formed. The motion was carried unanimously and it was agreed that a committee should be formed to draw up the rules. The committee formed was Messrs A A Crisp, J L Arnott, Wood, D Hall, H Egan, J Skelly, Hodgson and C Hume.
It was suggested that sixpence a month for nine months in the year would meet the case for subscription and over 40 of those present enrolled. Such was the interest amongst the townsfolk, by mid-December the membership was approaching 200, including 20 from Belford.
Mr J L Arnott, who hailed from Kirkcaldy and previously an outstanding player of both the Association and Rugby code, was appointed the secretary. Since his arrival in the town he had rendered great assistance to the management of Berwick Rangers FC and was the ideal person for the position.
By the season’s end the Berwick Rangers FC Supporters’ Club was well established, with delegates attending the football club's weekly committee meetings, and had raised the princely sum of £16 towards helping their everyday needs.
